Woman reading book carjacked near Mesa hospital

MESA, Ariz. -- Police officers are looking for a man who carjacked a woman's vehicle near a Mesa hospital Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., police officers responded to a carjacking that occurred at a medical building just south of Banner Desert Medical Center near Dobson Road and the Superstition Freeway.

According to Mesa police Detective Michael Melendez, the victim said she was sitting in her 2004 Kia Sorento reading a book when a man with a gun approached the open driver's side window and told her to get out of the car.

Melendez said the woman asked him if she could take her purse with her and he told her no. The woman got out of the car and the suspect got in then drove out of the parking lot southbound on Dobson Road.

Police officers were not able to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man with dark hair, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a light-blue shirt and blue pants.

The vehicle has an Arizona license plate number of 737CMB.
