PHOENIX – An 87-year-old man was killed after being hit by an SUV in Phoenix Wednesday night.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said Al Garvey was killed at approximately 8 p.m. near Seventh Street just south of Union Hills Drive.

Martos said Garvey attempted to run across the street mid-block and was hit by a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by a 34-year-old man.

The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on scene and Garvey was later pronounced dead.

Garvey's family said he suffered from dementia. It is unknown why Garvey left his home or why he was attempting to cross the street.

Martos said impairment is believed to be a factor, but no arrest has been made.
