GILBERT, Ariz. -- Gilbert police officers arrested a suspect in a bank robbery Friday morning with the help of two bystanders.
Sgt. Bill Balafas said a Chase Bank near Guadalupe and Gilbert roads was robbed at approximately 9 a.m. by a suspect identified as Christopher J. Wells, 33, of Chandler.
Police said a customer punched Wells in the face as he was leaving the bank.
"The gentleman in the bank punched the suspect," said Lt. Joe Ruet with the Gilbert Police Department. "The suspect produced a gun and then fled. He was a very brave citizen to get involved like that, but that's not something we recommend."
Wells left in a getaway car with an undisclosed amount of money in a bag. Another bystander saw the suspect and called 911. Police said that person followed the suspect vehicle and was able to direct officers to Wells.
After a brief pursuit, officers took him into custody near Guadalupe and Alma School roads.
