Dispute with former employer could land Valley man in jail

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Ignacio Casteneda, like so many people, is trying to support his family in this tough economy.

He makes his living as a landscaper.

“It's not like any other job, but I like it,” he said.

Earlier this year, Ignacio took a job as a contract worker for Land Care Unlimited, a landscaping company located in Goodyear.

One day at work, he was pulled over while driving a company vehicle.

He was ticketed for having a tail light out.

The fine was originally $285 but because it went unpaid, it ballooned to $753.

Ignacio says he has no way to pay the fine and feels he shouldn't have to.

After all, he says, he was driving a company vehicle.

“Even on the ticket it says Land Care Unlimited,” he said. “It's not my truck.”

Ignacio says he tried getting Land Care Unlimited to take care of the ticket.

“I have told him about it and I had told him about it and it took like two months and they were like, okay, we'll do something and they never did nothing,” he said.

If the ticket isn't paid soon, a warrant will be issued for his arrest.

So, Ignacio sent this letter to 3 On Your Side.

3 On Your Side contacted one of the owner's of the company, Tim Blake, a Litchfield Park city council member.

Blake says he was unaware the ticket was still outstanding, and immediately began looking into Ignacio's complaint.

The next day, Blake went to court and paid the ticket and provided 3 On Your Side with this receipt as proof.

“You guys are the best,” Ignacio said.

Ignacio and his family say they couldn't be happier, and thank 3 On Your Side for allowing them to put this all behind them.

“Thank you for helping us very much,” he said. “I appreciate it.”
