Shooting leaves one dead, 1 wounded in west Phoenix

PHOENIX - Police are investigating a double shooting in the West Valley Monday evening.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson, an altercation occurred between two men shortly after 7 p.m. Gunfire was exchanged and both men were struck.

A 24-year-old man died at the scene near 71st Avenue and Thomas Road. A 27-year-old man was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are still investigating to determine what actually happened.

Neighbors reported a car driving at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood. They said someone jumped out of the car, opened fire and then the car sped off.

Phoenix police located the car they believe was involved in the shooting several blocks away at an apartment complex.

A motive in the shooting is not known. At this time, it's not clear if this was a random shooting.
