PHOENIX - A man is in custody after hitting and killing a woman who was crossing Glendale Avenue.
Just after 9 p.m. on Friday, Sara Suarez-Leyva, 50, was crossing Glendale Avenue near 36th Avenue with a shopping cart when she was struck by a Chevy S10 pickup driven by Kenneth Lachcik, 54.
Lachcik failed to stop and fled the area.
Suarez-Leyva was pronounced dead on scene.
When Lachcik returned home, he called a friend to discuss what happened. The friend then drove Lachcik back to the scene where he was arrested and booked for leaving the scene of a serious accident.
Suarez-Leyva was 50 feet from her home when the accident happened. Her husband heard the collision and ran out to find his wife in the street.
She was not walking in a marked crosswalk when she was struck.
There is no word if Lachcik will face additional charges.
