Suspect dies while in Phoenix police custodyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - Phoenix police are investigating why a suspect died while in police custody Friday night.
Just before 7 p.m., police responded to an apartment near Bell Road and 19th Avenue for a fight involving three people.
Two of the three individuals complied with the officers' requests for identification, but Oesha V. Reese, 35, ran from the apartment.
Officers pursued Reese into an adjacent apartment complex and were able to take him into custody. Two officers escorted him to their patrol vehicle in handcuffs.
Once in the back seat of the patrol car, Reese claimed to have trouble breathing so officers requested medical assistance.
When Reese was taken out of the car, he collapsed to the ground and paramedics began life-saving efforts. Reese was transported to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Phoenix police are investigating why the suspect ran from officers and if a pre-existing medical condition contributed to Reese's death.
