PHOENIX – Phoenix police are investigating the shooting deaths of two men Wednesday night.

It started with a 911 call just after 8:30 p.m. A resident who lives near Cortez High School in the area of 31st and Dunlap avenues reported a single-car wreck. The caller said the car hit a fence surrounding the school.

A shots fired call had come in just minutes earlier, reporting gunfire about a mile away near Metrocenter Mall.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found one man dead inside the car. The second victim was found a short distance away in the street. Both had been shot to death.

Investigators, who were on the scene all night, said they do believe the crashed car and the shooting call are related. At this point, however, they have not been able to piece together what happened.

One of the men has been identified as 37-year-old Edward L. Calles. Police have not released the identity of the second shooting victim pending next of kin notification.

Investigators are asking anybody who knows anything about the incidents to call the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO.
