DPS officer injured in early morning wreck on I-10 in West ValleyPosted: Updated:
AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A Department of Public Safety officer and a Valley woman were taken to the hospital after the woman plowed into the back of the officer's cruiser early Wednesday morning.
It happened at about 3:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 10 just east of Litchfield Road west of Phoenix.
According to DPS, the officer had just returned to his vehicle after ticketing the driver of a semi. That's when a woman in her 20s hit the officer's cruiser.
While both cars were badly damaged, the officer and the woman reportedly suffered only minor injuries. Both were taken to the hospital.
It's not yet clear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the wreck. If it's determined that the woman was impaired, she could face criminal charges, said DPS Officer Thomas Simon. If impairment was not a factor, then the woman could be citing for failing to avoid a collision.
Investigators have not released the names of the officer or the driver who hit his cruiser.
The driver of the semi the officer had originally pulled over was not injured.
