Phoenix mother, boyfriend charged in toddler's deathPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – A Phoenix mother and her boyfriend are in jail after the woman’s 2-year-old son was found not breathing inside the family’s apartment.
The victim has been identified as Daniel Resendiz. According to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, Walter Munoz, 24, has been charged with murder and child abuse. The little boy’s mother, Bianca Arce, has been charged with child abuse.
Phoenix police officers and firefighters were called to the couple’s apartment in the area of 82nd Avenue and Indian School Road in West Phoenix just after 9 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters rushed the unresponsive toddler to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Based on observations made by hospital staff regarding some suspicious injuries and comments made by Arce, homicide detectives were called.
Investigators said that in the course of questioning, Munoz admitted to abusing Daniel for quite some time. It allegedly started shortly after he and Arce started dating.
According to Martos, Arce was aware of the abusive behavior, and had even witnessed it, but did nothing to stop it and never tried to get help.
Police have not released any details about Daniel’s injuries other than to say some of them appeared to be recent while others were older.
Arce has two other children, both younger than 10. They are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Munoz and Arce are in jail.
