MESA, Ariz. -- Two teens are in custody after a woman was shot at a Mesa apartment complex Tuesday night.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Mesa police responded to an apartment complex at University Drive and Gilbert Road after reports of a shooting near the office.

Officers set up a perimeter and one of the suspects was quickly located trying to cross a canal. A gun and a backpack were found near him and were gathered as evidence.

The second suspect was found hiding in a fenced commercial RV lot on Main Street just east of the canal.

Both suspects were positively identified by witnesses. Mesa police Detective Steve Berry said the suspects are 16- and 17-year-old males.

Berry said the 42-year-old victim was shot several times. She was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening wounds.

Police believe robbery was the motive.
