EL MIRAGE, Ariz. – An El Mirage couple are facing child abuse charges after police found their six children living among cockroaches and rotting food.

El Mirage police responded to the home of Sabrina and Richard Garcia in the 11500 block of Windrose Drive at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday in reference to a verbal argument between a husband and wife.

While speaking with Sabrina Garcia outside of the home, officers saw children through a window and proceeded with a home assessment.  Upon entering the home, officers found what they described as deplorable and unhealthy living conditions.

One of the children had cockroaches crawling on his leg. The carpet was reportedly black with dirt, food, trash and bugs.

Police say there were no edible items in the refrigerator. The bedrooms were littered with clothes, toys and food, and a glass marijuana water pipe was found in one of the closets.

When asked about their living conditions, Garcia reportedly blamed her kids and said they did not clean up after themselves.

Sabrina and Richard Garcia were placed under arrest and are facing six counts of child abuse. The six children were placed in the custody of Arizona Child Protective Services.
