Pretty in pink product picks

Posted: Updated:

Every October I am reminded to reflect on loved ones lost to breast cancer.  And I remember to celebrate those who survived the dreaded disease.  Plus I cheer on the women...and men who are battling breast cancer right now.

So, in the spirit of the pretty pink products that give back to breast cancer research, I did some shopping.  I opened my wallet to find some pink product picks that not only give your hard-earned money to research to try to beat breast cancer, but are pretty cool to boot.  And why not combine giving back with giving and get some of this stuff for your holiday shopping gifts.  Read on to see think pink products that give back.

Solano Power to Prevent hair dryer
Wow, this is truly my favorite hair dryer that I have ever tried!  With 1875 watts of power, the Solano dried my hair fast and evenly.  With three temperature settings and a cold shot button to set the style, it worked wonders on my mane.

Solano has partnered with Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), a nonprofit organization that supports women battling the disease with a variety of programs and services.  Solano created the pink hair dryer as a symbol of support for breast cancer patients and the company makes an annual donation to LBBC.  The dryer is available at through the end of this month and sells for $159 and a $20 discount is offered by selecting the “pink” promo code.

Cricket Amped Up teasing brush
Another great tool that works right along with the blow dryer is a good teasing brush.  Amped Up has a pretty pink one that gives back to breast cancer research.  I found mine for $6 at Backstage Salon & Day Spa located at McClintock and Guadalupe in Tempe.

Westin Kierland Resort Pink Wellness Massage & Pink Facial
You gotta love this one!  The Agave Spa located in the Kierland Commons Westin Resort gives 10% of the cost of your massage or facial treatment to the Susan G. Komen Phoenix chapter through the end of this month.  There is also a unique 2-hour class called Guided Mediation that gives 10% back.  So go ahead and pamper yourself while you support the fight against breast cancer.   For more information and to book a pink spa service call 480-624-1202 or visit

Dial products
Kudos to the Dial Corporation for donating $100,000 to benefit the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.  With helpful online articles and a 24/7 hotline, the Network of Strength keeps people dealing with breast cancer informed.  And for that reason, I happily purchased the Dial Liquid Hand Soap and Dial body wash products.

Walgreens Pink Promise program
Walgreens is donating $500,000 this year to the Walgreens Treatment Assistance Fund benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  Pink products for purchase include a $5.99 pink ribbon ball cap, an Iphone pink cover for $4.99, cute and comfy pink socks for $2.99 a pair and even my favorite sugarless Orbit White Bubblemint gum.  Each little gum square has the breast cancer symbol on it.

Makeup items on sale at Walgreens that give back include the Revlon Grow Luscious mascara that sells for under $5 and the Revlon Lipgloss.  Revlon is giving 10% of the sale of these items back to breast cancer research.

Late Harvest Riesling Wine at Fresh & Easy stores
Made with Riesling grapes from Washington State, the Late Harvest wine is light, delicious with salads and gives back one dollar at Fresh & Easy grocery stores for every bottle sold to Breast Cancer Research.  I’ll drink to that!

L.A. Looks Sport gel
If you use hair gel, here is a deal for you and for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.  For a limited time, you get a 30 oz. bonus size of the gel for the 20 oz. price and L.A. Looks is donating $100,000 to Breast Cancer Network of Strength.  Get the good gel stuff at drug stores.

Bosley Professional Strength shampoo and conditioner
If you like professional hair products, then consider investing in the Bosley line this month.  Through October, Bosley is selling the Breast Cancer Awareness Twin Pack at the reduced price of $20 for consumers and the company is donating a portion of the proceeds to fund breast cancer research and awareness.  The Bosley line is sold at local salons.  Find the location closest to you at

Safeway supports
Safeway stores make it easy to support the fight against breast cancer.  Through the end of the this month, every time you check out, the credit card machine gives you the option to add either $1, $3 or $5 to your grocery bill.  Safeway gives your cash contribution to local organizations that fund breast cancer research and support.

And through October 26th, purchase $30 worth of merchandise labeled with the breast cancer pink ribbon and Safeway gives $5 of that sale to local breast cancer charities.  Up to $2.5 million dollars will be donated and since 2001, the Safeway Foundation has raised more than $78 million in fundraising dollars.  Safeway and their shoppers can truly make a difference this month.

Philosophy 100% product
Philosophy has created a luxurious shower gel just for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Buy the 16 oz. $20 bottle of Philosophy Shower for the Cure Shower Gel and every penny of your purchase (100 percent of the net proceeds) goes to Women’s Cancer Research Fund.  Treat yourself to a bottle of this and give back while giving yourself a little bubbly bath break.

Ulta’s ultra support
Ulta has a unique idea that supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Called the Windows of Love program, Ulta has a national campaign that invites shoppers to bring in a letter about a loved one who has battled breast cancer.  The touching letters are posted on Ulta store windows for all to read.  And for the first 50,000 letters submitted, Ulta donates $1 a story to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  I read a few of the letters at the new Chandler Ulta store and I left feeling inspired to fight on for all of those affected by this evil disease.

Ulta also invites customers to donate $1 at checkout that goes directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Customers who donate are entered in a drawing to win a beauty gift bag worth $598.  Ulta will give away 377 beauty totes with each store having one winner.  Or give $5 and Ulta gives $2.80 to the foundation and you get a pink ribbon tote or umbrella.  Or pass on the gift and your entire $5 goes directly to the charity.

And last but not least, Ulta has numerous beauty products that also give back to breast cancer research and support.  I purchased the OPI Pink of Hearts nail color for $8.50 and the ribbon on the packaging tells me that a portion of the sale goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

JC Penney supportive active wear & accessories
JC Penney is donating $50,000 to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, so they have pink ribbon items to celebrate the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I bought a soft and comfy grey crewneck “believe” t-shirt for only $7.99 with my 20% off coupon.  JC Penney offers coupons almost weekly in the Sunday paper.  Jewelry, workout wear and other items are also available both in store and through the company’s website at

So go ahead and do some holiday shopping that gives back.  October is the month to knock out that gift list while helping to knock out a cure for breast cancer.
