Pima regional bike count underwayPosted: Updated:
Thousands of Tucsonans get around via pedal power every day, but just how many is the focus of the Third Annual Regional Bike Count now underway.
Volunteers with the Pima County Association of governments are tallying up the number of bicyclist on the streets during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Counters set up at key intersections, looking at riders' age, sex, and how many are wearing helmets.
"I expect that we will have higher numbers than we did last year. Last year a cold spell came in when we were counting cyclists. And this is the first year we're counting pedestrians as well," said Ann Chanecka of the Pima Association of Governments.
The count will allow local leaders to see trends in bicycle and foot traffic, prioritize improvements and identify unsafe locations.
