SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- An off-duty Department of Public Safety officer was found dead at a Scottsdale resort Tuesday afternoon.

Officer/Paramedic Mark Serna, 43, of New River, was found alone in his room, according to a DPS news release. There were no signs of foul play.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce DPS has lost one of our sworn officers," said DPS Director Robert Halliday. "My sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Mark's family and to all the DPS employees."

Halliday said the Phoenix Police Department is handling the investigation.

Serna was a nine-year veteran of DPS. He began his career at DPS as a patrolman in Casa Grande then joined the Central Air Rescue Unit as a paramedic in 2003.

Serna was born in Silver City, N.M., and graduated from Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, Ariz. He previously worked for the Cottonwood fire and police departments before joining DPS.

Serna is survived by his parents and three children.
