PHOENIX - An armored-car courier was attacked in front of a Phoenix Walgreens Wednesday morning in a failed robbery attempt.
According to police, as the courier was leaving the Walgreens at 51st Avenue and Baseline Road, the 27-year-old suspect approached and tased him in the leg. The courier responded by opening fire with his service revolver.
The suspect, identified as Naji Nathaniel Sonnier, fled without any money and went to a pickup truck. Witnesses followed him to the truck and got the license plate number.
Sonnier fled the area and abandoned the vehicle near 83rd Avenue and Baseline Road. Officers captured him in a nearby park on the Gila River Indian Reservation.
Phoenix police said Sonnier was shot in the groin. He faces charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault and theft.
Gunshots shattered the window of a vehicle in the Walgreens parking lot. The driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for cuts from the broken glass. He has since been released from the hospital and is in police custody.
