MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police said a man shot and killed his father during a family argument Monday evening then apparently tried to kill himself.

According to Mesa police Detective Michael Melendez, officers responded to a shooting call at a home near Broadway Road and 24th Street at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Beth Farinacci told officers that she and her husband, Jeffrey, got into an argument with their 21-year-old son, Aaron, about him doing the dishes.

Aaron reportedly became upset, went into his parents' bedroom and locked the door. His father got a spare key and unlocked it.

Melendez said Aaron retrieved his father's gun from the nightstand and shot him.

Beth told police that she heard two gunshots and then heard Jeffrey yell for her to call police because he had been shot.

After calling police, Beth went to check on Jeffrey and Aaron reportedly pointed the gun at her. She backed away and Aaron fled on foot.

Jeffrey was transported to a Scottsdale hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Melendez said Aaron was located a few blocks away bleeding from his chest due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was airlifted to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.
