Lawmakers urge review of bowl game tax complaint

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Four lawmakers are urging the Internal Revenue Service to "thoroughly examine" a tax complaint filed against three premier college football bowls.

Playoff PAC is a political action committee that wants the bowls replaced with a championship playoff system.

The group recently filed the complaint with the IRS against the operators of the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange Bowls. They are three of the five games that constitute the Bowl Championship Series.

Playoff PAC accuses the bowls of violating their tax-exempt status by paying excessive salaries and perks and providing "sweetheart loans."

Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton and three other House members critical of the BCS wrote to IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman requesting a close review of the complaint.
