MESA, Ariz. - Heavy winds and rain led to major damage in southwest Mesa near Dobson and Alma School roads.

The Mesa Fire Department is reporting about 40 power poles fell down during the storm.

Twenty to 30 homes have damage from the poles landing on them. The residents in those homes have been evacuated due to some of the lines still being live.

Only one person suffered minor injuries.

The Fire Department is working to secure damaged roofs to prevent further damage from more storms.

SRP reports 19,000 customers in that area were without power. It was restored just after 8 p.m. for residents who were not affected by the power poles.

SRP provided free bags of ice to help customers without power in Chandler.

Mesa fire says six of the 12 homes severely damaged by the poles are not livable so a shelter has been set up for residents that have been displaced.
