TEMPE - The Tempe police bomb squad was called to the Tempe Transportation Center on Tuesday after Valley Metro light rail security found an unattended suitcase-like package.

Patrol officers immediately cordoned off the entire area near Fifth Street between Forest and College avenues.

Valley Metro officials stopped light rail and bus routing into the Tempe Transportation Center.

Passengers coming from the west into Tempe disembarked at Third Street and Mill Avenue. Passengers coming into Tempe from the east unloaded at Rural Road and University Drive. A bus bridge transported passengers between those two light rail stops during the closure.

Passengers were delayed while police made sure the area around the Tempe Transportation Center was safe.

Fifth Street was also restricted to pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the same area.

The Tempe bomb squad detonated the package. K-9 units combed the area to make sure it was safe before activity at the light rail stop returned to normal.

Investigators determined the oversized briefcase didn't contain an explosive device.
