PHOENIX – An inmate at one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s jails was able to escape after scaling five fences around the jail.
A news release from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Clayton Thornbug, an inmate at Durango Jail, scaled five fences before being caught by detention officers minutes after his escape.
MCSO tells 3TV Thornburg was in the recreation yard of the jail Thursday morning when he jumped over the fences. Three of the five fences he scaled are 15-feet tall and covered with razor wire at the top.
When Thornburg managed to get to the sheriff’s impound lot after the fifth fence, deputies say the inmate had lost his uniform and pink underwear due to the razor wire.
Thornburg suffered cuts to parts of his body. After being detained he was treated for his cuts at the Maricopa County Medical Center and then transferred back to the Fourth Avenue Jail.
Thornburg is behind bars for an extensive number of property crime charges and is now facing an additional felony charge of escape.
Sheriff Arpaio says this incident marks the first escape from Durango Jail in several years.
