SURPRISE, Ariz. – A teenage boy who is being held in connection with the death of another 14-year-old will remain in custody.

Juan Vergara was shot inside a house on Bell and Reems Roads in Surprise on September 16 and died the following day.

The 14-year-old boy he was with had been taken into custody after the shooting. Surprise police want to charge him with negligent homicide.

A social worker said in court Wednesday that it was not in the teen’s best interest to remain in custody of his parents.

Surprise police confirm that during the investigation into the shooting they came across $500,000 locked in a safe in the home, as well as marijuana and handguns. Investigators tell 3TV they believe the residents were dealing drugs out of the home.

One million dollars in the parents' bank account has been frozen. It was also revealed in court that the boy's father admitted to smoking marijuana with his 14-year-old son.

The next hearing will determine whether the teen is charged as an adult.
