MESA, Ariz. -- Police officers arrested two suspects who allegedly stole a car while two people were moving out of a Mesa apartment Monday night.
According to Mesa police Detective Michael Melendez, the 24- and 25-year-old victims were moving from an apartment near Dobson and Broadway roads and were loading their vehicle with property at approximately 10:40 p.m.
Melendez said a 23-year-old man, identified as Francisco Olvera, entered the apartment with an assault rifle and demanded the keys to the car while a 16-year-old male waited outside as a lookout.
After getting the keys, Olvera reportedly grabbed a purse and left the apartment. Melendez said both suspects were armed with rifles and fled in the vehicle.
The victims were not injured during the robbery.
Chandler police officers spotted the stolen vehicle and began a pursuit. The suspects bailed from the vehicle near McClintock Drive and Ray Road.
A perimeter was established and with the assistance of a K-9 officer, the suspects were located in the backyard of a nearby residence. Melendez said Olvera was found hiding in a swimming pool and the teen was found nearby.
Melendez said the victims positively identified Olvera as the primary suspect who entered the apartment demanding the keys.
Both assault rifles were recovered from the stolen vehicle.
Melendez said both suspects admitted their involvement to Mesa police detectives.
Olvera is a prohibited possessor and had a felony warrant for aggravated assault at the time of his arrest. The younger suspect had a juvenile probation absconder warrant at the time of his arrest. Both suspects were booked for two counts of armed robbery, burglary, car theft, prohibited possessor, and unlawful flight from law enforcement.
