Goodwill event this afternoon offers job opportunities for unemployed

TEMPE, Ariz. -- One of every 10 Arizonans is out of work. If you're one of them, you'll want to put on your interview clothes, grab a stack of resumes and head to the Embassy Suites at U.S. 60 and Rural Road in Tempe this afternoon.

As Tess Rafols explains, dozens of potential companies looking to hire will be on hand for a job fair hosted by Goodwill of Central Arizona.

A variety of employers are taking part in the event, including Stream Global Services, Cypress HomeCare Solutions, Bank of America, West Business Services, Van Tuyl Group, Brookline College, Cox Communications, Macayo's Mexican Restaurant and U-Haul International, among others.

Michael Burchett of Goodwill said all of the companies -- about 30 are expected -- have positions to fill right now.

Goodwill hosts job fairs quarterly.

"With the unemployment the way it is, our job fairs are becoming much more popular with the public," Burchett said. "We've had to work that much harder to get employers to come out."

Today's job fair, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Embassy Suites Hotel at 4400 S. Rural Road, Tempe. The events begins at 1 p.m. and wraps up at 4 p.m.

Job seekers should dress professionally, bring copies of their resume and be prepared to speak with recruiters looking to fill various open positions.

"Be prepared to talk about yourself and sell yourself," Burchett advised. "Don't be fooled by the companies and their brands. It's easy to think each company does one specific thing, but if all of these employers have someone coming out to do recruiting, imagine what other positions are available. Don't ask, 'What do you have to offer?' but tell them what you have to offer to them."
