Fugitive wanted for 30 years returned to ArizonaPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities in Arizona have taken custody of a fugitive who disappeared nearly 30 years ago while on probation for beating a Phoenix apartment manager to death.
John Whiting was arrested earlier this month in Newark in central Ohio, where he had apparently lived for decades despite arrests that should have tipped authorities to his Arizona warrant.
Sgt. Jesse Spurgin of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Monday that Whiting was booked into the county jail Saturday and was being held without bond. Jail records don't list a defense attorney.
The 57-year-old Whiting was charged 14 times and convicted eight times in Licking County, Ohio, on charges including drunken driving and aggravated menacing.
He was convicted of manslaughter in the beating death in 1978.
