1 Killed, 1 hurt in early morning wreck in S. PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- One person was killed in an early morning single-car wreck in South Phoenix that closed 19th Avenue south of Baseline Road.
It happened at about 2:50 Friday morning.
According to investigators, a speeding car ran off the road and plowed head-on into a tree, killing the driver. A passenger in that car was taken to the hospital. That person reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
While it's not clear what caused the wreck yet, investigators on the scene say skid marks indicate that speed was likely a factor. The driver apparently lost control just before the car hit the irrigation canal and then a tree.
"The damage was pretty extensive," said Sgt. David Montoya of the Phoenix Police Department.
The family of the driver, a man in his 20s, was on the scene. Police have not released any details about either victim.
Phoenix police said 19th Avenue would remain closed in that area for several hours. Traffic was being rerouted through the neighborhood.
