TUCSON, Ariz. -- A fire did extensive damage to a midtown Tucson hotel Thursday morning.  Authorities ruled the cause as arson and say it was set to cover a burglary.

The Executive Inn at 333 W. Drachman St. sustained $100,000 in damage according to the Tucson Fire Department.

Tucson Fire Department spokesperson Captain Trish Tracy says the department received numerous calls to 911 reporting smoke and flames coming from the office beginning at about 3:30 a.m.

According  to Captain Tracy, when firefighters arrived, the office on the northwest corner of the two-story building was engulfed in flames.  Sixteen people were evacuated from guest rooms for their safety.  They were taken to the nearby Copper Cactus Inn.

Capt. Tracy said 14 trucks and over 40 firefighters responded to the blaze.

She reminds everyone that when you stay in a hotel make sure you know the closest and alternative exits and stairwells.  She pointed out evacuation plans are posted in every hotel room with exit locations and the safest way to exit.
