Phoenix-area couple booked in human smuggling casePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Sheriff's deputies say they've arrested a Phoenix-area couple on human smuggling charges after finding them driving a vehicle packed with suspected illegal immigrants.
The Maricopa County sheriff's office identified the couple taken into custody late Tuesday night in north Phoenix as 34-year-old Todd Bartlett and 47-year-old Fonna Mccullar. Online court records show Bartlett has previously used a Mesa address and Mccullar one in Phoenix.
The sheriff's office noted that both are citizens and both white. Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement that the arrests demonstrate that his deputies don't just target minorities.
The sheriff's office is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for possible racial profiling. Early this month the government sued Arpaio because he had not turned over documents requested in the probe.
