SURPRISE, Ariz. – The best friend of a Surprise teen accidentally shot in the head is shedding light on what happened.

The loss of Juan Vergara has been brutally hard on those who loved him, particularly for his friends who are still coming to terms with his senseless death.

Laken Prokopec tells 3TV, “We used to play this game Picture Wars.”

Photos and memories are all Prokopec has left of her best friend Vergara. “He was just so nice and sweet to everyone he met and we became very close.”

The 14-year-old was shot in the head Thursday night while at a friend’s house and on Friday was taken off of life support.

Prokopec admits, “When the first news report came out with his name, that’s when I found out and it felt so much more real.”

Surprise police have been slow to release details about what happened that night but have arrested another 14-year-old. He is expected to be charged with negligent homicide.

Prokopec explains, “He was just hanging around with some friends and they were messing around with a gun and he was shot, an accident.”

Prokopec says that is the talk amongst friends of Vergara and the other teens involved.

Sgt. Mark Ortega, with the Surprise Police Department says, “It’s one of those situations where kids get around guns and don’t have any sense how dangerous they are.”

Vergara was just a month into his freshman year at Valley Vista High School and would have turned 15 on Monday.

Prokopec says, “There's going to be getting better, but not forgetting. I'll never forget Juan. If you knew him you will never forget about him.”

Another teen and an adult were reportedly at the home when the shooting happened. Police say the investigation remains underway to determine if they will face any charges.

There is no word on funeral arrangements but a memorial fund has been set up at Wells Fargo in Juan Vergara's name.
