22-Year-old Mesa soldier killed while fighting in Afghanistan

MESA, Ariz. – Another Arizona soldier has been killed while fighting the war in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Monday that 22-year-old Pfc. Barbara Vieyra has died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Pfc. Vieyra died September 18 from wounds she sustained when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and a rocket-propelled grenade fire in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

Pfc. Vieyra was assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade out of Fort Hood, Texas.
