SURPRISE, Ariz. – A horse had to be rescued from a hole outside a Surprise home near Waddell and Cotton Lane.

The horse was taken out of the hole Thursday just after 8 p.m. and was put back in his stable and is expected to be okay besides a few scratches.

The homeowners had a crate over a hole in the yard but 25-year-old Sampson fell right through and was down there for about four hours.

A horse rescue group strapped Samson and hoisted him out. He was sedated and blindfolded during the rescue to try and make things more comfortable for the horse. Rescuers were particularly careful not to break the horse’s legs.

Samson’s owner tells 3TV he and another horse were playing when Samson fell through the grate.
