Surprise teen dies after suffering gunshot wound to the headPosted: Updated:
SURPRISE, Ariz. – A teenage boy dies after he was shot the head in Surprise Thursday afternoon.
Detectives have not released a lot of details, but they did confirm Juan Vergara, 14, was flown from his house in Surprise near Reems and Bell Road to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was put on life support.
Vergara suffered a .22-caliber pistol gunshot wound to the head. He was in critical condition before being taken off life support early Friday morning.
According to Sgt. Mark Ortega, another boy who was at the house is in custody and has been charged with negligent homicide as a result of Vergara's death.
Police canvassed the neighborhood to talk to neighbors about what they may have heard or saw. They also went inside the home where the shooting took place to try to gather evidence.
The investigation into the shooting death of the teen is ongoing.
