Woman, daughter escape after car plunges into canalPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A Valley woman and her daughter are lucky to have escaped with little more than bumps and bruises after their car plunged into a canal Thursday morning.
As Javier Soto explains, it happened at about 8 a.m. in the area of 19th Avenue and Dobbins Road. The woman swerved to avoid a wheel cover that had flown off a car in front of her and was sailing right toward her VW bug.
Rona Johnson said the sun was in her eyes and before she realized what was happening, her VW had dropped about 10 feet into a canal.
Johnson and her daughter were able to get out the of the vehicle. She said it helped that the VW's windows rolled down automatically when the car was in the canal.
Neither Johnson nor her daughter was hurt.
