Arizona begins process to seat redistricting panel

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX -- The state is now accepting applications by Arizonans who want to help draw new legislative and congressional district boundaries for use during the next decade.

The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments will screen applicants for the Independent Redistricting Commission. That
five-member commission will oversee mapping of new districts starting in 2011.

The appointments commission will nominate a pool of 25 candidates, and four elected officials each will then appoint one commission member. The four newly appointed commissioners then will choose a fifth commissioner.

The redistricting commission was created under a voter-approved law that took redistricting out of the hands of the Legislature.
