SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Surprise police arrested a driver for assault and unlawful flight after he reportedly fled during a traffic stop Monday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Mark Ortega, Officer Guadalupe Garcia stopped Benjamin Moulinier, 19, for a traffic violation near Dysart and Greenway roads.

When Garcia approached Moulinier's vehicle on foot, he sped away, causing the rear of his vehicle to swerve and strike the officer.

Ortega said Garcia chose not to pursue Moulinier for the public's safety.

Garcia was not seriously injured in the incident.

Moulinier was later located by officers and he surrendered.

Moulinier reportedly told police that he fled because he thought he had a warrant for his arrest.

Moulinier was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and unlawful flight. He was booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
