PHOENIX -- A wounded man tried to drive himself to the hospital after a fight, possibly over money, ended in a shooting early Tuesday morning.

It happened at about 4 a.m. at the Avante Apartments at 61st Avenue and McDowell Road.

According to investigators, the victim was visiting a woman and her two young children when an argument broke out. It's not clear yet what sparked the fight, but police believe it might have been over money.

The woman called 911.

"We had a group of individuals hanging out in an apartment at this apartment complex on McDowell," said Lt. Sean Kennedy of the Phoenix Police Department. "There was an argument between the group. One of the individuals produced a handgun, shot the victim in the chest."

Police stopped the victim in the parking lot of the apartment complex as he was trying to drive himself to the hospital.

The victim was taken to the hospital. His injuries reportedly are not life threatening.

Police do have the suspect in custody; he reportedly had a gun in his possession when he was arrested. According to Kennedy, one other person who was involved in the altercation ran away.

The woman and her two children were not injured in the shooting.
