Mesa 1-year-old falls headfirst into toiletPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- A 1-year-old Mesa girl was transported to a hospital after she fell headfirst into a toilet Monday morning.
According to the Mesa Fire Department, the girl and her 3-year-old brother were in the bathroom of their home near Baseline Road and Loop 101 when the girl somehow fell headfirst into the toilet.
The children's dad heard the commotion and found the girl facedown in the toilet. He called the Fire Department to check out his daughter.
Mesa fire Capt. Forrest Smith said it sounded like the brother had been flushing the toilet intermittently and by the time the dad got the girl out, it appeared she had been submerged at some point.
He said it was not clear if the boy flushed the toilet while the girl's head was in it or as she was being pulled out.
"When crews got there, they found that she was conscious and alert," Smith said. "Fortunately, it didn't sound like she had any fluid in her lungs."
The girl was transported to a local hospital for observation.
