TEMPE – Ariz. – Two people are dead after a fatal crash involving alcohol near Arizona State University.

Tempe police say the driver of an SUV, a 17-year-old girl from Gilbert, was leaving the Quadrangles apartments near Rural Road and University Drive when she struck another car heading eastbound early Saturday morning.  About a minute after that crash, a motorcyclist reportedly crashed into the scene.

Witnesses who were there before emergency crews arrived say they tried to comfort the wounded.

ASU student Soumya Poduri explains, “I was really helpless. So I didn’t want to go mess it up more and hurt them even more so the best thing that I could do was call 911. I just tried to talk to them, keep them engaged. Keep them breathing.”

The motorcyclist, identified as 19-year-old Matthew West of Glendale, and the passenger in the car struck by the SUV were killed. Police say the driver of the SUV was under the influence of alcohol.

3TV has learned that the passenger killed was hip-hop star and DJ Abay Lattin, also known as Carnegie, from the group Silver Medallion. He had performed earlier in Scottsdale.
