SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Surprise police officers arrested a woman after her son reported being hit with an electrical cord.
At approximately 10:45 p.m. Thursday, police officers responded to a call of alleged child abuse. According to Surprise police Lt. Franklin Caldwell, an 11-year-old boy went to a home near Bell Road and 166th Drive asking to stay a few days.
Caldwell said the resident observed a significant amount of welts on the child's arms and legs and said the boy reported being struck several times with an electrical cord. The resident called police.
Officers confirmed the injuries and notified the Fire Department to respond for medical treatment.
After investigators interviewed the boy, they went to the child's home and arrested his mother, Lawanna Smith, 32, for suspicion of alleged child abuse, child neglect and domestic violence.
