6-Mile segment of SR 87 to be narrowed until spring

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Part of the highway connecting metro Phoenix with the Payson area is undergoing major work that requires narrowing the route to only one lane in each direction until late next spring.

The state Department of Transportation says State Route 87 will be temporarily narrowed along a six-mile section north of the Bush Highway/Saguaro Lake Turnoff, with traffic in both directions sharing the highway's northbound lanes.

The department says the $10.7 million project will add a third southbound lane as well as make other safety improvements.
