Tucson homicide rate hits 2009 totalPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tucson has it's 40th homicide of 2010. That matches the total number of homicides recorded in 2009.
A body was found lying in a car wash just south of 22nd Street at Beverly early Wednesday morning. That's near 22nd and Craycroft.
Police say they are not sure if the man was killed there or dumped there.
Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson police public information officer, said the victim is a 33-year old black male. They have not yet released his name.
They are asking for the public's help if anyone saw anything in the area that may lead to suspects. Lopez said a blue "boxy" sedan was seen at the car wash before officers found the body.
The Tucson Police Department just last week launched a new crime initiative to try and battle the increasing number of violent deaths in the city. Lopez said the officer who found the body this morning was working under that new initiative.
Officials indicated the majority of the homicides can be tied to gang violence or domestic situations.
