TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson ended a monthlong competition by naming Steven Threet as his starter for Saturday's opener against Portland State.

Faced with a similar three-man battle, new Vikings coach Nigel Burton took a different approach: he's not saying anything, at least to anyone outside his team.

Junior Connor Kavanaugh appears to be the front-runner, but seniors Drew Hubel and Tygue Howland have both been starters.

Threet, a transfer from Michigan, earned the starting job at Arizona State after a close battle with junior Brock Osweiler and Samson Szakacsy. Osweiler is still expected to play some against Portland State.
