Arizona governor candidates spar during debatePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Republican Gov. Jan Brewer and Democratic challenger Terry Goddard sparred over illegal immigration and the state's economic troubles Wednesday evening during their first and possibly only televised debate.
Goddard said Brewer is damaging Arizona's image and economic development prospects by portraying Arizona as a violent place because of border-related crime.
Brewer said Goddard's union supporters are hurting Arizona through a boycott in protest of the state's illegal immigration law.
Brewer said her administration is encouraging economic development by attracting business expansions and relocations, and freezing state regulations. Goddard said Brewer has yet to balance a budget since becoming governor and failed to make creation new jobs an emergency priority.
