National Guard troops begin border deployment MondayPosted: Updated:
A new National Guard deployment to the Arizona-Mexico border will start Monday, after weeks of training.
Only a handful of soldiers will arrive, but more will follow every Monday after that, until 524 troops are in place at the end of September.
The national guard will carry weapons, but only for self-defense.
They'll be the "eyes and ears" of the Border Patrol for about a year. As part of president Barack Obama's proposal to beef up border security.
