Two people died this morning when the small plane they were in crashed just after takeoff from the Cochise County Airport in Willcox.
The identity of the dead have not been released.
A person at the airport told Fox 11 News that the plane went down about "a quarter to a half mile northwest of the runway". She identified the plane as a T-18 "Thorp" which is a homemade plane.
The FAA has also confirmed the crash and is sending agents to the scene.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Department and Willcox Fire Department removed the bodies from the wreckage.
The T-18 Thorp was first designed and built in 1962 by John Thorp. It's designed as an open cockpit aircraft built of all aluminum and utilizing a military surplus engine. The plane was very popular in the 1970's and 80's but faded in popularity when other plane kits came on the market.
