Mesa father backs minivan over toddler daughterPosted: Updated:
MESA -- Police say a Mesa father accidentally ran over his little daughter, killing her Wednesday evening.
It happened just after 7 p.m. near Ninth Avenue and Broadway Road.
According to Detective Steve Berry of the Mesa Police Department, the family had just gotten home from shopping. The parents were taking things into the house when they lost track of the 18-month-old.
The toddler walked behind the family's minivan just as the father was backing it out of the driveway.
Police said the driveway is very short and somewhat dark because it runs alongside the house rather then being situated in front.
"Needless to say, he didn't know the child was back there in the dark area," said one officer on the scene. "As you can imagine, a small child like that -- you can't see them in the mirrors or the windows."
An air ambulance was called out. Rescue crews did everything they could to save the little girl, but she died at the scene.
Police said impairment was not a factor and have not arrested the father.
