Early morning apartment fire in North Phoenix goes first alarm

PHOENIX -- Residents of a North Phoenix apartment complex woke before dawn Tuesday morning to find flames shooting from the roof.

The good news the two units that burned were not occupied.

The call was escalated to a first alarm. Some 50 firefighters were called out to 35th and Northern avenues; they were able to knock down the flames in just a few minutes.

Investigators believe the fire started in a common laundry area, but it's not yet clear what sparked it.

While some residents were evacuated as a precaution, no injuries were reported.
