Pedestrian stabbed during attempted robbery in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. -- A man was stabbed in the chest while walking in Mesa Sunday night.

According to Mesa police Detective Steve Berry, the victim was walking on Allred Avenue from Lindsay Road when a black male in all dark clothing crossed the street and walked up behind him. The suspect reportedly held a knife to the victim's neck and demanded his money.

The victim told police that he turned and pushed the suspect while telling him he didn't have any money, only a pack of cigarettes. The suspect then stabbed him in the chest and fled eastbound toward Lindsay Road.

The victim said he passed out for five to 10 minutes before calling the police.

He was transported to Banner Gateway Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The knife reportedly hit the victim's sternum and stopped.

Police searched the area but did not find the suspect.
