TEMPE, Ariz. -- It the first day of classes at Arizona State University and some of the new freshmen might be wondering if they're prepared for college.

According to a new study, students who went to high school in Maricopa County might not be, especially when it comes to math.

The study by Morrison Institute for Public Policy looked at 153 public and charter high schools in Maricopa County during 2007 and 2008. The study represents about 59 percent of high school graduates who went a Maricopa County community college or one of the three state universities the next academic year.

According to the study's results, about 70 percent of the class of 2008 were ready for college English. For math, the number was just 42 percent.

Looking at the class of 2007, about 76 percent of the students were prepared for college English courses and 51 percent were ready for college-level math.
