UT governor signs warrant sending Jeffs to TexasPosted: Updated:
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has signed an extradition warrant that will send polygamous church leader Warren Jeffs to Texas to face criminal charges.
Herbert spokeswoman Angie Welling says the warrant and an executive agreement were signed Tuesday evening.
Texas authorities charged the 54-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints with bigamy, aggravated sexual assault and assault based on alleged incidents with underage girls at a church ranch in Texas.
Jeffs' Utah attorneys have said they would fight extradition.
Jeffs is currently in the Utah State Prison awaiting a decision on a retrial of his 2007 criminal case.
Last month, Utah's Supreme Court overturned Jeffs' convictions on two counts of accomplice rape.
